Promises

This body of work is part of an ongoing reckoning with a feeling of being out of place in academia and the art world that I experience, and the way that the backdrop to my early life echoes back into the present when I find myself feeling that way. The drawings are partial renderings of locations in which I spent my childhood, centred in and around the Dee Road Estate (now renamed Dee Park) in Tilehurst. Reflecting on this location and its back-story brought this new body of work into being.

Numbers #06 – #09 were intended to be part of a tiled installation of drawings, but I changed my mind about this when the drawings turned out as abstractly as they did. I’ve included the source material, which is an image from the local newspaper, as a guide to what I was working towards.

For more information about this body of work, see the Beginnings research seminar presentation in the Research part of the site.
